Blood pressure is measured by using two different numbers. Systolic pressure, the top number, measures blood pressure, as the heart contracts and pushes blood through the arteries. Diastolic pressure, the bottom number, is taken when the heart relaxes. Normally, your blood pressure should be around 120/80 or lower, but it may vary from person to person and can even fluctuate from moment to moment.
Modern lifestyle of high mental stress and less physical activity seems to be the prime cause of high blood pressure. But, causes may not always be known. Genetics also plays a role, as this disease is known to run in families. However, it’s more common in people who are heavy smokers, drinkers, obese and those with a family history of high blood pressure and stroke. Even thickening, hardening and narrowing of the walls of the arteries, called arteriosclerosis, can cause it.
